Participating in the boiledleather.com AFFC/ADWD combined reread, which puts the books that were split by geographic location back in (loose) chronological order. I'll be updating with thoughts on chapters finished and since this is a reread, may contain spoilers.
In the battle of the prologues, neither of these are my favorites in the series. Varamyr gives insight into Warging, but he's an unreliable narrator to the max. (Aren't all first person narrators? Yes, but he's really bad.) The final scene is cool, but I didn't feel like we got anything new. Pate didn't give me enough insight into Oldtown, which is what I'm really looking for, but we do get to see a...familiar face. I completely missed the Sphinx's riddle the first read, but it seems pretty plain on the second. I'll give the victory to Dance for intrigue.
Aeron 1 gives us the revelation that Damphair's brother is dead. I always think this chapter is in Storm with all the other kings'. I'm here for Asha's Queensmoot. Damphair is absolutely crazy and wields a dangerous amount of power over the people.
Areo < SAND SNAKES. He seems cool but superfluous. And in a series that that now has 24 POV characters, I'd like to only introduce people that are going to be central to the plot. But on the other hand, SAND SNAKES.
- Prologue (Varamyr): ADWD 1
- Prologue (Pate): AFFC 1
- The Prophet (Aeron I): AFFC 2
